Uniquely Detroit: Parisian Department Stores

Monday July 7, 2008
It's funny how things work out. It was big news in the 1990s when Parisian, an Alabama-based department store, opened a store in Laurel Park Place in Livonia. Not quite the sensation of say, an IKEA, but the new name generated a lot of interest and curiosity. Since that time, the Parisian name expanded slowly into other areas within Metro Detroit. Today, it has a limited presence with three stores; but they are the only three Parisian stores left in the nation after most of the chain's 40 department stores were swallowed up by a bigger chain -- something we know a little bit about after the demise of our beloved Hudson's. Alabama's loss, however, is Detroit's gain. Parisian is now uniquely Detroit's.
