Rather than going to capital hill with looking for a hand out, why not go to capital hill looking for a contract? I believe every mail delivery vehicle in the USPS should be hybrid. Every garbage truck and city bus should also be hybrid. Indeed any gov’t vehicle engaged in constant stop-and-go driving should be hybrid. The gov’t might also be pursuaded to pitch in to help taxi companies go hybrid. Detroit could get large contracts. The gov’t can get something tangible for its (our) money. And Obama can get a head start on his energy plan. Don’t bail out…help out!
One more comment. Auto related companies have already been getting engaged in wind turbine technology. Approach the gov’t for help to kick start Detroit in that direction. The demand for autos is going to be down for a year or more in this economic environment. But Obama wants to use green energy as a way to create jobs. Detroit should be at the forefront of US wind turbine manufacturing. I live in Houston. We had to diversify when the oil industry crashed in the mid 80’s. The green energy industry can lead Detroit away from being a one-industry town.
How does that work currently? Don’t U.S. Auto companies get most government contracts for vehicles?
