Positively Detroit

Thursday June 18, 2009
Granted, it takes a cock-eyed optimist to find good news about Detroit these days, but the national news is jumping on the bandwagon to promote the city's decline. One of the top stories on Yahoo News recently cited the fact that the city has few grocery stores and that a Chrysler dealership recently closed as evidence that the city's going down fast.

Frankly, Detroit has had a grocery store shortage for quite a while now (that is unrelated to GM's bankruptcy or the recent economic decline) and Chrysler dealerships are going out all over the place. As Detroit tops every national survey in negative categories -- and I simply don't buy that we're in the top 10 of most polluted cities -- it's hard to remain optimistic, but the first step is to look at what's positive about Detroit and its suburbs.
