Detroit's City Council: Shaking Things Up
Wednesday July 1, 2009
The League of Women Voters of Detroit started the drive, but several organizations and individuals have joined the effort. So what is it all about? By gaining enough signatures, the Detroiters for Council by Districts will add a proposal to the November ballot. The proposal would change the makeup of the city council from at-large representation (meaning the entire populace of Detroit votes for all nine members of the city council) to representation by district.
Just how much this would change the makeup of the council is anybody's guess, but it would serve to mix things up as Detroit heads in a new direction with a new administration -- hopefully away from the scandals that have plagued both the mayor's office and the city council over the last couple of years.
Aside from shaking things up, the organization lists ten reasons for redistricting. If you agree with the notion, get involved. The organization needs to reach its signature goals by August 4th, 2009.
