By August 30, 2011

A lot of Michigan colleges are back in business this week. As we parents write the first tuition check, it is natural to wonder about our investment. That's where national college rankings come in.

Forbes released its annual America's Best Colleges ranking earlier this nonth. Unlike those other best college lists, Forbes criteria includes a host of practical factors: post-graduate success, retention rates, amount of student-loan debt, and competitive awards.

If you assumed University of Michigan topped the list in Michigan, think again. Kalamazoo College ranked number one in the state and 57th in the nation. Other Michigan colleges fared as follows:

  • 161: University of Michigan, Ann Arbor
  • 166: Hope College
  • 219: Albion College
  • 279: Hillsdale College
  • 327: MSU
  • 372: Calvin College
  • 415: Wayne State University
  • 434: Alma College
  • 511: Grand Valley State University
  • 525: Andrews University
  • 528: Western Michigan University
  • 531: Central Michigan University
  • 558: Michigan Technological University
