There is at least one college ranking guide that manages to place both the University of Michigan and Michigan State University in the Top 50 of national universities: Washington Monthly's College Guide and Ranking. Rather than assessing colleges based on value, prestige or career success, Washington Monthly asks what the college is doing for the country in terms of educating low-income students, encouraging community service and providing ground-breaking research.

Michigan Universities

The University of Michigan was ranked 10th in the nation, mainly because it ranked third in the nation for research expenditures and second for the number of science & engineering Ph.D.'s awarded. Michigan State University ranked 33rd, mainly because it ranked 14th in the nation for providing access to low-income students.
