Midsummer Nights in Midtown (aka Detroit's Festival of the Arts)
Where: Several locations off of Woodward Avenue by Wayne State University
The 22nd annual Festival of the Arts goes a new direction in 2009. While it will still showcase musicians, dancers and visual artists from around the world, it will have a new moniker (Midsummer Nights in Midtown) and will cover all the weekends in June.
Motor City Pride
Where: Ferndale
Motor City Pride is an event celebrating the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender lifestyle. In addition to a "Pride Idol" competition, the event holds a family picnic, film night and two stages of music.
Bavarian Festival in Frankenmuth
Where: Heritage Park, Frankenmuth
In its 51st year, the Bavarian Festival is one of Michigan's top five festivals (at least according to AAA). It's a weekend of parades, German music, carnival rides and dancers. Of course, there is also food and drink, including German dishes and every kind of beer imaginable.
Red Bull Air Race World Series 2009
Where: Windsor (and Downtown Detroit) Riverfront
The Windsor Series is only one of six Red-Bull races scheduled worldwide in 2009. The race features pilots that compete in the areas of "speed, precision and skill" through an obstacle course that includes specially-designed air pylons.
Cruisin' Gratiot
When: 6/15/09 through 6/20/09Where: Gratiot, Eastpointe
Eastpointe's Cruisin' Gratiot is a week of car shows culminating in the actual cruise on Saturday, June 20th. The week-long event is both a celebration of the automobile and the "back in the day" past time remembered by many Detroiters: cruising Gratiot Avenue.
River Days
Where: Detroit Riverfront, Downtown
If you haven't already explored Detroit's RiverWalk, River Days will give you the excuse to check it out. The three-day event includes a parade of sailboats and powerboats decorated in lights, musical performances, a dock-jumping competition and a historic tall ship. There will also be loads of food.
Summer Fireworks 2009

Where: Throughout the Metro-Detroit area
Nothing celebrates summer like a symphony of explosive lights, colored flames, stars, crackles and pops as orchestrated by a professional. The most heralded fireworks display in the Metro-Detroit area is the Target Fireworks scheduled for Wednesday, June 24th, but there are plenty of others.
Belleville National Strawberry Festival
Where: Various Locations Throughout Belleville
The brainchild of local strawberry farmers, the festival is now in its 34th year. It not only provides entertainment and attractions and all-manner-of-delicious strawberry treats, but the festival helps raise funds for over 40 nonprofit organizations.
14th Annual Dearborn Arab International Festival
When: 6/19/09 through 6/21/09Where: Warren Avenue, Dearborn
The International Arab Festival presents ethnic performances, live music, over 30 international-food booths, coffee-cup readings, henna art, carnival rides, an old-fashioned Ferris wheel and Arab merchandise.
Ann Arbor Antiques Market
