By Laura Sternberg, About.com

You hear about these movies by word of mouth or through award nominations, but you don't remember them being shown at your local movie theater. That's because there are only a few Detroit Theaters that Show Independent and Foreign-Language Films.

Ann Arbor: Michigan Theatre

Not only does the Michigan Theatre show independent films, it also hosts many events, is a venue in the Ann Arbor Film Festival, hosts a summer film camp and presents classic films via its summer series. The theatre has two screens: the 1700-seat historic auditorium and a 200-seat screening room.

Ann Arbor: State Theatre

The Art Deco theatre was designed by C. Howard Crane, the same architect who designed the Fox Theatre in Detroit. The theater also has midnight shows.

Bloomfield Hills: Landmark Maple Art Cinema III

The theater presents independent and foreign-language films on three screens. Online ordering is available.

Novi: SR Movies Novi Town Center

The one-time-AMC theater now specializes in foreign, independent and art films. Specifically, SR Movies is one of the only venues that show Indian films in the Metro Detroit area. Online ordering is available through the theater's website.

Royal Oak: Landmark Main Art Theatre

The 1940s-era theatre is located in the heart of Royal Oak. These days, it has been subdivided to provide three screens. In addition to independent films, the theater hosts a midnight movie series in the summer. Online ticket purchase is available through the theater's website and other online sources.
