Your neighbor's boy just got into Kettering University. Congratulations are in order; but if you really want to understand the accomplishment, you need a little more information about the university's admissions standards. Listed below are the Hardest Colleges to get into in Michigan as ranked by ACT scores (2010/2011).

ACT Score of 31

As might be expected, the University of Michigan is the hardest college to get into in Michigan. This makes a good deal of sense because it is ranked first in the state and 42nd in the nation. Only 42% of applicants are accepted. Of those students who are admitted, 75% have an ACT score of at least 31 and/or a SAT score of at least 1430. 

ACT Score of 30

Kalamazoo College is ranked second in the state and 104th in the nation. Only 63% of applicants are admitted. Of those students who are accepted, 75% have an ACT score of at least 30 and/or a SAT score of at least 1370.

ACT Score of 29

Of those students who are admitted to the following colleges, 75% have an ACT score of at least 29:

  • Hillsdale College students have an average ACT score of 29 and/or SAT score of 1970. Only 38% of the students attending are from Michigan.
  • Hope College in Holland, Michigan is ranked fifth in the state and 127th in the nation. Only 82% of applicants are admitted. Of those students who are admitted, 75% have an ACT score of at least 29 and/or a SAT score of at least 1310.
  • Kettering University in Flint, Michigan requires an ACT score of 29. Only 64% of those students seeking admission are accepted.

ACT Score of 28

Of those students admitted to the following colleges, 75% have an ACT score of at least 28:

  • Michigan Technological University is ranked eighth in the state and 259th in the nation. Only 84% of those students seeking admission are admitted. Of those students who are admitted, 75% have an ACT score of at least 28 and/or a SAT score of 1340.
  • Calvin College students have an ACT score of 28 and/or a SAT score of 1325. 

ACT Score of 27

Of the students admitted to the following colleges, 75% have an ACT score of at least 27:

  • Michigan State University is ranked fourth in the state and 126th in the nation. Only 70% of those students seeking admission are accepted. Of those students who are admitted, 75% have an ACT score of at least 27 and/or a SAT score of 1280.
  • Albion College, a liberal-arts college in south-central Michigan, is ranked sixth in the state and 178th in the nation. Only 79% of those students seeking admission are accepted. Of those students who are admitted, 75% have an ACT score of at least 27 and/or a SAT score of at least 1280. 
  • University of Detroit - Mercy requires an ACT score of 27, and only 63% of those students who apply are accepted.

ACT Score of 26

Of those students who are admitted to the following colleges, 75% have an ACT score of at least 26:

  • Grand Valley State University (7th state/226th nation) accepts 78% of applicants.
  • University of Michigan - Dearborn (9th state/315th nation) accepts 61% of applicants.
  • Andrews University (11th state/349th nation) accepts 57% of applicants.
  • Alma College (13th state/531st nation) accepts 72% of applicants.
  • Aquinas College (18th state/786th nation) accepts 82% of applicants.
  • Lawrence Technological University (23rd state.866th nation) accepts 60% of applicants.
  • Concordia University - Ann Arbor (30th state/1050th nation) accepts 63% of applicants.

ACT Score of 25

Of those students who are admitted to the following colleges, 75% have an ACT score of at least 25:

  • Spring Arbor University (14th state/612th nation) accepts 78% of applicants.
  • Western Michigan University (15th state/684th nation) accepts 85% of applicants.
  • Oakland University (24th state/882nd nation) accepts 78% of applicants.
  • Cornerstone University (25th state/884th nation) accepts 75% of applicants.
  • Adrian College (33rd state/1185th nation) accepts 60% of applicants.

ACT Score of 24

Of those students who are admitted to the following colleges, 75% have an ACT score of at least 24:

  • Madonna University (16th state/716th nation) accepts 76% of applicants.
  • Ferris State University (17th state/745th nation) accepts 55% of applicants.
  • Central Michigan University (19th state/805th nation) accepts 70% of applicants.
  • Eastern Michigan University (21st state/828 nation) accepts 75% of applicants.
  • Lake Superior State University (29th state/1038th nation) accepts 75% of applicants.
  • Rochester University (31st state/1077th nation) accepts 83% of applicants.
  • Saginaw Valley State University (32nd state/1082nd nation) accepts 89% of applicants.
  • Northern Michigan University (34th state/1215th nation) accepts 78% of applicants.

ACT Score of 23

Of those students who are admitted to the following colleges, 75% have an ACT score of at least 23:

  • Wayne State University (20th state/822nd nation) accepts 79% of applicants.
  • Siena Heights University (28th state/1029th nation) accepts 75% of applicants.
  • Northwood University (36th state/1445th nation) accepts 75% of applicants.
