The International Buffet offers yet another alternative to Greektown casino patrons, and its multiple International cuisines ensure there will be something for everybody in one restaurant. Compared to the other casino buffets in the Detroit area, however, the food-station presentation is uninspired. While the dishes offered are many and varied -- several include shrimp and beef -- the dessert station fails in comparison to the buffets at other Detroit area casinos.

Atmosphere and Service

Apparently a casino-hotel staple, the buffet in Greektown is located in the building housing the casino, just off the walkway that crosses over Monroe Street and connects to the hotel and parking structure. Currently, the price for either lunch or dinner is $18.95.

Several hostesses line the restaurant's entranceway to seat customers in a large dining room, which is not crowded for lunch. The dining room itself has high ceilings, stone-wall accents and glass-bubble chandeliers. Like most buffets, the lighting and background music does little to alleviate a cafeteria-like atmosphere. Service is prompt and efficient; dishes are cleared quickly and drinks kept filled.

Food

The buffet is organized by cuisine type, but the presentation of each individual station is relatively uninspired. In fact, Greektown’s International Buffet is most reminiscent of the food court at Twelve Oaks Mall. The salad bar is the only course offered that is given an island presentation. The rest of the cuisines and courses are presented through individual storefronts lining the walls along the southeast corner of the restaurant. The cuisines offered include Greek, Italian, Pizza, Asian and Mexican. There is also an American section that includes dishes such as macaroni and cheese and meatloaf. While the dishes offered are generally well done, there are few stand outs; General Tao’s Chicken and Mushroom Ravioli in the Italian section make the best impression. Note: Beef and shrimp dishes are plentiful.

Unlike the grand dessert circle at Caesars Windsor or the pastry-shop presentation at MotorCity, dessert is given no special role at Greektown’s International Buffet. Instead, it is presented as just another in a line of food stations. While it offers sugar-free desserts and self-serve ice cream, the selection otherwise is sparse and the portions of most dishes small. For instance, the chocolate-chip cheesecake square was tiny and served lukewarm, and the little brownie square didn’t really deserve its own plate.
