List of Memorable Detroit Commercials

Advertising the Metro Detroit Area and/or Its Assets

By Laura Sternberg, About.com

You have to be "from Detroit" to appreciate a few of these commercials, especially as Highland Appliance and Boblo Island are no longer with us and Bill Bonds hasn't anchored for WXYZ in quite a while. Even so, these memorable Detroit commercials will trap a jingle or two in your head.

Boblo Island

This commercial is set to a lyric-twisted version of Chubby Checker's Let's Twist Again. It may also have been a play on the title of Boblo Island's Twister ride.

Detroit

This commercial was WXYZ-TV's (Channel 7 back then) ode to Detroit. Stand Up and Tell 'em You're from Detroit featured a young-looking Bill Bonds and the "big hair" of the mid 1980s.

Detroit Zoo

This behind-the-scenes showcase of the zoo's "cast" caught our imagination and was a big marketing success.

Faygo

Comic books and rubber bands
Climb into the tree top
Falling down and holding hands
Tricycles and red pop
...(enough said?)

Highland Appliance

The use of Russians and the size of the video recorder, as well as its existence and price, effectively date this commercial to the 1980s.

WRIF

WRIF 101, Detroit's Home of Rock 'n Roll, scored big with this close up of Kelly Harmon's lip syncing. That's right, Kelly is Mark's sister.
