Closer than many of Detroit’s suburbs, Windsor is located just across the Detroit River to the south –- yep, south. It is shadowed by the bigger city and metropolitan area but contains over 200,000 citizens. It also has automotive roots like the Motor City itself. Unlike its close neighbor, however, Windsor is not subdivided downtown by multiple highways, and it is still surrounded by undeveloped farm land.
Windsor Attractions
In addition to Windsor’s clean city streets, its Riverfront Park, $24 million art museum, Windsor Raceway, Windsor Spitfires Jr. Hockey Team, large restaurant district and Caesars Windsor, its biggest allure for tourists from the United States is that it is the gateway city into a different country. Windsor has an international flavor most notably demonstrated in the city’s – and country’s -- more relaxed social mores.
Relaxed Social Mores
For instance, Windsor has all-nude strip clubs, sports gambling, a drinking age of 19, swinger clubs, Cuban cigars and legalized prostitution. In fact, it is legal in Windsor for a woman to walk topless down the street -- if she is so inclined. The city is also more permissive toward the use of marijuana. While it is illegal to possess marijuana for recreational use, the laws are rarely enforced, and the medicinal use of marijuana has been legalized. Additionally, same-sex couples from Metro Detroit are known to cross the border into Ontario to get married.
