The far western suburbs of Metro Detroit, including Canton, Plymouth, Northville and Novi, existed as cities and townships before they were encompassed in Detroit's suburban sprawl. They have their own unique history and character that sets them apart as places to visit and enjoy.
Settled in 1825 and a six-mile-square township by 1834, Canton's history consisted mostly of dairy and corn farming. In fact, it was once known as the "Sweet Corn Capital of Michigan," In the last couple of decades, Canton's plum location off of I-275 and its open space for development, made it an attractive location for both business, such as IKEA and Yazaki, and new home construction, such as Cherry Hill Village.
Plymouth has been around for a while; it was settled in 1825 and a city by 1932. In fact, with its 4 railroad tracks, at one time it was the 7th largest community in Michigan and a destination unto itself - at least until the Detroit suburbs spread out to encompass it. Named after Plymouth, Massachusetts and once locally known as "Podunk," it is characterized by its quaint downtown, complete with colonial architecture and a central commons area. While the downtown area continues to thrive, the last decade's seen a shift from general stores to restaurants and night-life spots.
Straddling Wayne and Oakland Counties, Northville is known for its Victorian heritage, affluent homeowners, impressive schools and, of course, its race track, Northville Downs. Once a part of Plymouth Township, Northville broke off from it because the government seat, located in Plymouth, was too far away to provide adequate representation and bridge repairs.
Legend has it that Novi is named after the 6th stop on a road or railroad - No. VI. Whatever the origin of its name, Novi has been known as "Novi Corners" and is best known as a shopping destination. Home to Twelve Oaks Mall, Fountain Walk, Novi Town Center, and Main Street, among many other shopping centers, Novi has a vast number of shopping options, probably because of its cushy destination between two freeways.
