Results and 2012 Olympics Medal Count for Michigan Athletes

Of the athletes representing Michigan at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, several are bringing home world records and/or Olympic medals. Whether the athletes were born, raised or trained in the state, we are claiming them as our own in the Results and 2012 Olympic Medal Count for Michigan Athletes.

Boxing: Claressa Shields

Medals: Shields earned a Gold medal.

Michigan Connection: Claressa Shields was born and raised in Flint, Michigan, where she lives to this day.

Results: Shields competed in the 2012 Summer Olympics in Women's Middle-Weight Boxing and beat Russia's Nadezda Torlopova in the Gold Medal Bout on August 9th.

Gymnastics: Sam Mikulak

Michigan Connection: Sam Mikulak attends and trains at the University of Michigan.

Results: Mikulak competed in two events in Men's Artistic Gymnastics at the 2012 Summer Olympics:

  • Mikulak competed in the team event. The team came in 5th on July 30th.
  • Mikulak competed in the Men's Vault event and came in 5th on August 6th.

Gymnastics: Jordyn Wieber

Medals: Wieber earned a GOLD medal.

Michigan Connection: Jordyn Wieber is from DeWitt, Michigan, where she still resides.

Results: Wieber competed at the 2012 Summer Olympics in Women's Artistic Gymnastics:

  • Wieber earned a GOLD medal as part of the women's team event on July 31st.
  • Wieber came in 7th in the Women's Floor Exercise Final on August 7th.

Shooting: Daryl Lee Szarenski

Michigan Connection: Four-time Olympian Daryl Szarenski was born and raised in Saginaw, Michigan.

Results: Szarenski competed in two shooting events at the 2012 Summer Olympics:

  • Men's 50m Pistol -- Szarenski ranked 28th during qualification on August 5th.
  • Men's 10m Air Pistol -- Szarsenski ranked 23rd during qualification on July 28th.

Swimming: Michael Phelps

Medals: Phelps earned six medals, including four GOLD medals and two SILVER medals.

Michigan Connection: Phelps came to the University of Michigan after the Athens Olympics to enroll at the school and train under Bob Bowman. When Bowman moved to Baltimore (Phelps' hometown) in 2008, Phelps followed him. Michael Phelps may no longer live or train in Michigan, but we still claim him as one of our own.

Results: Phelps competed in seven swimming events at the 2012 London Olympics:
  • Men's 100m Butterfly -- Phelps ranked 1st to earn a GOLD medal on August 3rd.
  • Men's 200m Butterfly -- Phelps ranked 2nd to earn a SILVER medal on July 31st.
  • Men's 200m Individual Medley -- Phelps ranked 1st to earn a GOLD medal on August 2nd.
  • Men's 400m Individual Medley -- Phelps ranked 4th on July 28th
  • Men's 4x100m Freestyle Relay -- Phelps ranked 2nd to earn a SILVER medal on July 29th.
  • Men's 4x200m Freestyle Relay -- Phelps ranked 1st to earn a GOLD medal on July 31st.
  • Men's 4x100m Medley Relay -- Phelps ranked 1st to earn a GOLD medal on August 4th.
Note: After the 2012 London Olympics, Phelps holds the record for earning the most medals in Olympic history.

Swimming: Allison Schmitt

Medals: Schmitt earned three GOLD medals, one SILVER medal, and one BRONZE medal.

Michigan Connection: Allison Schmitt was raised in Canton, Michigan, where she attended Canton High School. She trained under Bob Bowman at Club Wolverine in 2008.

Results: Schmitt competed in five swimming events at the 2012 London Olympics:

  • Women's 200m Freestyle -- Ranked 1st to earn a GOLD medal
  • Women's 400m Freestyle -- Ranked 2nd to earn a SILVER medal
  • Women's 4x100m Freestyle Relay -- Ranked 3rd to earn a BRONZE medal
  • Women's 4x200m Freestyle Relay -- Ranked 1st to earn a GOLD medal
  • Women's 4x100m Medley Relay -- Ranked 1st to earn a GOLD medal
Note: Schmitt came in ninth at the Beijing Olympics in the 200m freestyle. She also won a bronze medal (along with Katie Hoff, Natalie Coughlin and Caroline Burckle) in the 4x200m relay.

Swimming: Peter Vanderkaay

Medals: Vanderkaay earned a BRONZE medal.

Michigan Connection: Vanderkaay was born in Royal Oak, Michigan and raised in Rochester, Michigan. He attended the University of Michigan starting in 2002 and graduated in 2006. He was part of Club Wolverine, where he stayed to train for eight years with John urbanchek (2002-2004), Bob Bowman (2004-2008), and Mike Bottom (2008-2010).

Results: Vanderkaay competed in one swimming event at the 2012 London Olympics:

  • Men's 400m Freestyle -- Vanderkaay ranked 3rd to earn a BRONZE medal on July 29th.
Note: Vanderkaay won a gold medal in the 4x200m freestyle relay and a bronze medal in 200m freestyle at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. He also won a gold medal in the 4x200m freestyle relay in the 2004 Athens Olympics.

Track & Field / Marathon: Desiree Davila

Michigan Connection: Desiree Davila was born and raised in California but currently resides in Rochester Hills, MI.

Results: Davila did not finish the Women's Marathon that took place on August 5th at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.

Water Polo: Betsey Armstrong

Medals: Armstrong earned a GOLD medal.

Michigan Connection: Goalkeeper Betsey Armstrong was born and raised in Ann Arbor, Michigan. She also attended Huron High School and the University of Michigan.

Results: Armstrong is the goalie on the U.S. Water Polo team and earned a GOLD medal at the 2012 London Olympics. The U.S. team performed as follows:

  • The U.S. beat Hungary 14-13 in Group A on July 30th.
  • The U.S. tied Spain 9-9 in Group A on August 1st.
  • The U.S. beat China 7-6 in Group A on August 3rd.
  • The U.S. beat Italy 9-6 in the Quarterfinal on August 5th.
  • The U.S. beat Australia in the Semifinal on August 7th.
  • The U.S. beat Spain in the Gold Medal Match on August 9th.
Note: Armstrong's U.S. Team took Silver at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Wrestling: Jake Herbert

Michigan Connection: Although Jake Herbert currently resides in Ann Arbor, Michigan, he was born and raised in Pennsylvania.

Results: Herbert competed in one wrestling event at the 2012 London Olympics:

  • Men's 84kg Freestyle Wrestling -- Herbert lost to Azerbaijan's Sharif Sharifov 1-3 in the Quarterfinals.
