There are several athletes with connections to the Detroit Metro Area on Team USA for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Some of the connections are stronger than others, but we can still cheer them on:
Modern Pentathlon
Sheila Taormina was born and raised in Livonia. While she is competing in the Modern Pentathlon in 2008, she attended the Olympics in 1996, 2000 and 2004 in the sports of swimming and the triathlon.
Rowing
- Matt Hughes was born and raised in Ludington, Michigan. He also attended the University of Michigan.
- Ellen Tomek was born and raised in Flushing, Michigan. She also attended the University of Michigan.
Sailing
Carrie Howe was born and raised in Grosse Pointe, Michigan
Soccer
Kate Markgraf was born and raised in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.
Swimming
- Kara Lynn Joyce was raised in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
- Allison Schmitt was raised in Canton, Michigan.
- Peter Vanderkaay was born in Royal Oak and raised in Rochester. He also attended the University of Michigan and currently resides in Ann Arbor.
- Michael Phelps attended the University of Michigan.
Track & Field
Anna Willard attended the University of Michigan.
Water Polo
- Betsey Armstrong was born and raised in Ann Arbor, Michigan. She also attended the University of Michigan.
- Alison Gregorka was born and raised in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Andy Hrovat attended the University of Michigan.
