History of College Basketball Teams from Michigan in "March Madness" Tournament

Michiganders usually have at least one team to follow in the NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament aka March Madness. In fact, Michiganders had five teams to follow in the 1998 tournament, including Michigan, Michigan State, Detroit Mercy, Eastern and Western. The state has also had its fair share of successes, upsets and records at the tournament since 1939. Here are some quick and dirty statistics from NCAA.org about college basketball teams from Michigan in the "March Madness" Tournament prior to 2014:

1. Michigan State University (MSU)

Michigan State has been to the tournament 27 times and won the Championship twice (1979 & 2000).

2. University of Michigan (U of M)

University of Michigan has been to the tournament 24 times and won the championship once in 1989.  

3. University of Detroit Mercy

Detroit Mercy has been to the tournament six times (1962, 1977, 1979, 1998, 1999, 2012), twice under coach Perry Watson in the late 90s. The team has never broken into the Elite Eight.

4. Eastern Michigan University

Eastern Michigan has been to the tournament four times (1988, 1991, 1996 & 1998), three under Coach Ben Braun. The team's most notable appearance was probably in 1991, when it beat 5th-ranked Mississippi State in the first round, 76-56. The team has not broken the top eight.

5. Central Michigan University

Central has been to the tournament on four occasions -- approximately once a decade (1975, 1977, 1987 & 2003). The team's most notable appearance was probably in 2003 when it upset 6th-ranked Creighton by beating the team in the first round. Central has not yet broken the top eight. 

6. Western Michigan University

Western Michigan University has been to the tournament three times (1976, 1998 & 2004). The team's most notable appearance was in 1998, when it upset 6th-ranked Clemson in the first round. Western has not broken into the top eight.

7. Oakland University

The Oakland University Grizzlies have been to the tournament on three occasions: 2005, 2010, & 2011;but did not break into the Elite Eight. The team's coach at the time was Greg Kampe. 

8. Wayne State University

 Wayne State has been to the tournament once back in 1956 under coach Joel Mason. The team did not break into the top eight.
